Sune Explained: R U R′ U R U2 R′ and the Correct Setup

After making the yellow cross, the next goal is to face the yellow top corners upward too. Sune is sometimes described with a fish-shaped pattern as a memory aid. However, seeing one yellow corner facing up is not enough on its own to choose an algorithm and setup.

Check both conditions in this example

The first two layers and yellow cross are complete. Keep yellow up and blue front. The only upward-facing yellow corner is at front-left; at the same time, the top-front-right corner's yellow sticker faces front. Together, these observations define Cube Room's Sune starting case.

Gray positions are ignored for this check. Yellow stickers are marked Y.

The diagram shows where the upward-facing yellow corner belongs. You must also inspect the front to confirm the front-right corner's yellow sticker. Do not apply this setup to a mirrored case, two upward-facing yellow corners or another top pattern just because it seems fish-shaped.

Seven moves, grouped for learning

Try reading R U R', then U R, then U2 R'. The first groups bring the relevant corners into the working area; the final top half turn and right return complete the sequence. Highlight U2 in your memory: it is not a single 90° top turn.

With manual buttons, choose a half turn before pressing the top face, or follow the guided U2 action. Wait for each animation to finish instead of rapidly pressing the last symbols. The move record should reflect the turns actually accepted by the app.

What to check after the top becomes yellow

After the full sequence, the entire top should be yellow, the first two layers intact, and the yellow cross preserved. Top-layer side colors may still be misplaced. That is not necessarily a failure: orientation concerns which way a sticker faces, while position concerns where the whole piece belongs.

Cube Room checks the yellow face before moving to final permutation. Do not repeat Sune just because the side colors still look mixed; repeating it may disturb orientation that is already correct.

Test whether you recognize the case

Watch once, then complete the guided practice yourself. In the changed setup, locate the only upward-facing yellow corner, return it to front-left, and again confirm that front-right yellow faces front. Use hints if needed, while recognizing that an assisted result and an independent setup result are recorded differently.

If the yellow face is complete, continue to orientation and position. If it is not, check your setup, prime symbols and half turn using the troubleshooting sequence.
